Course description:
This class is an overview of the Hebrew Scriptures or Old Testament. Basic research and reference skills as well as how the Bible came into English are taught. There is a concentrated study of the Pentateuch (Genesis through Deuteronomy) and an overview of the remaining books of the Old Testament. The course includes the impact of the Bible on history, literature and arts, geography of the Middle East and customs and culture of the corresponding time periods.
Textbook:
The primary textbook for this class is the Bible. Students may use any translation of the Bible. They will access their choice of translation via the website Biblegateway.com. In class use I will refer to the New English Standard Bible. The Bible and It’s Influence edited by Cullen Schippe and Chuck Stetson is our supporting text and students can access this book in class or check out.
Extraordinary Classroom Expectations:
Weekly Journal Assignment:
In your Evernote notebook for Bible each week you are to make an entry on a note labeled “Bible Journal”. Your entry is to be dated for the Friday of that week and contain the following: 3 to 5 sentences reflecting on the material that was studied that week. You may voice specific questions, opinions or conclusions drawn from relevant material. This is to be a chance for reflection not a summary and must be directly related to that week. This will be checked on Friday and if not completed then it will be accepted on Monday only for -20.
Grading: Tests/Projects count 60% and quizzes/weekly journals/assignments count 40%.
